What is snoring?

Snoring is a transmitted sound which is generated by turbulent airflow whilst sleeping.

What is the cause of snoring?

Snoring is multifactorial. The following conditions contribute to a patient developing snoring:

  • Nasal obstruction
  • Large tonsils
  • Redundant soft palate
  • Large tongue
  • Sedative medication
  • Alcohol
  • Weight

What can be done about snoring?

In general treatment of snoring starts with addressing any underlying nasal obstruction. The next step in snoring is to address any issues which a patient may have with their soft palate.

Does soft palate surgery work?

In the selected patient soft palate surgery works very well. It does not work in everyone, however it is very effective when offered to the patient with good anatomy for a soft palate procedure.
